H.K. Gruber Frankenstein!!
R. Strauss (arr. Joolz Gale) Ein Heldenleben (A Hero’s Life)
Why should heroes get all the glory? H.K. Gruber’s tongue-in-cheek exploration of heroes and villains is devilishly clever and hugely entertaining. Subtitled ‘A pan-demonium for baritone chansonnier and ensemble after children’s rhymes’, Frankenstein!! is one of the subversive composer’s best-known works, and features orchestral instruments alongside toy instruments.
Strauss’ epic tone poem is brimming with vitality, humility, depravity and love — testament that a hero’s life is exhausting! Presented here in an arrangement for chamber orchestra, Ein Heldenleben quotes many of the composer’s earlier works in this (most likely) autobiographical reminiscence.
Duration: approx. 100 minutes, including a 20 minute interval
