About this performance
Please join the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in warmly welcoming our new Chief Conductor, Jaime Martín!
No stranger to MSO audiences, Jaime returns to Melbourne this August to conduct and meet with community. These celebratory performances will introduce our new Chief Conductor, featuring evocative works that showcase the power of the Orchestra in all its glory.
- Telling its tale of the liberation of captive souls from an evil enchantment, Stravinsky's Firebird is full of dramatic musical moments, reaching a jubilant climax.
- Margaret Sutherland described her work Haunted Hills as "A sound picture written in contemplation of the first people who roamed the hills — their bewilderment and their betrayal — frenzied dance: its seeming gaiety born of despair."
- Dukas uses all the colours of the orchestra to portray the story of The Sorcerer's Apprentice in this symphonic poem made famous by Disney's Fantasia.
Please note: due to restrictions following the Victorian lockdown, the MSO Chorus is unable to perform at these concerts. Boulanger's Psalm 24 has been replaced with Vaughan Williams' The Lark Ascending in this program.
